Description
Lower Withleigh Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th or 17th century, with a roof that was re-done in the 18th or 19th century. The building features rendered cob at the lower end and rubble at the higher end, topped with a dry slate roof. There is a rubble stack at the right end and a brick lateral stack at the rear center. The layout consists of three rooms with a central hall, a 17th-century wing extending at right angles to the rear of the hall, and a 20th-century lean-to in the rear angle between the wing and the higher end, which has been extended with a single-storey wing at the lower end.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a four-window range. The windows are mostly late 19th-century horned sashes, except for a two-light casement on the ground floor to the left, all likely in their original openings. A gabled porch is centrally located in relation to the windows and features a panelled door on the right, along with another doorway on the left that has a split ledged door. The rear of the house mainly has two-light casements.
Inside, there is a 17th-century fireplace with an oven located at the rear of the hall, along with an axial beam and two crossbeams in the lower end room, one of which is embedded in the wall at the left-hand end. The roof structure dates from the 18th or 19th century and features tie beams, some of which have been replaced with collars.
