Description
The farm buildings located north-west of Coombeshead Farmhouse date from the mid-19th century and consist of barns, linhays, and a horse-engine house. The buildings feature rubble walls, some of which are rendered, while the horse-engine house has weatherboarding on its upper floor. They are topped with dry slate roofs, with the horse-engine house distinguished by its conical end.
The overall layout is U-shaped, with the threshing barn positioned at the top of the yard and the round-ended horse-engine house built on the yard side. At right angles to this is the principal carriage entrance and barn, all covered by a single roof. There is also an L-shaped range of low linhays, although their fronts have been infilled.
The buildings are two storeys high, with each barn having a single window range. The original window in the threshing barn and the planked threshing doors are designed to allow for various ventilation options. The carriage entrance features arched bracing that supports the wall plate of the roof. The horse-engine house is supported by tapered rubble piers and retains its original curved weatherboarding.
Inside, the buildings showcase original queen-post roof structures and original beam and joist floor structures. Coombshead represents a good example of a small model farm, with the horse-engine house noted for its particularly striking design.
