Description

The building consists of farm buildings that are parallel to the road immediately north of Mill Hill Farm, dating from the mid-19th century. Constructed of red brick with a red tile roof, the buildings have an L-shaped plan that includes an octagonal horse engine house at the angle. The roadside front features a large partially blocked segmental-headed double width opening with double doors on the far left, followed by four segmental-headed windows arranged in a square to the right. Next is a double width opening with a segmental head and double sliding doors, followed by seven blind round-headed arches, a plank door, and a plank pitching door on the right. The octagonal horse engine house has basket-headed archways on the ground floor and hayloft with pitching windows above. There are diamond-shaped brickwork ventilation holes in the gable end and side wall of the attached barn. The main range and barn feature king post roof construction. The horse engine house was formerly used to house a horse-driven threshing machine. This unaltered range is notable for incorporating a rarely found horse engine house, which is also unusual for having a hayloft and for being located on the farmyard side of the farm buildings.
