Description
Mill Hill Farmhouse is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 16th century to the mid-17th century, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building features close-studded timber-framing with bracing and square-panelled timber-framing that has rendered infill. The gable ends are rendered, and there is a blue lias plinth with sandstone capping. The roof is covered with red tiles and has brick stacks.
The main body of the farmhouse is U-shaped and dates from the 16th to 17th centuries, while the 18th-century square timber-framed infill is located between the projecting wings. There are 19th-century lean-to extensions for a wash house and bakehouse on the right gable end. The main body is three stories tall and has a cellar beneath the north end.
On the west front, the gabled three-story wings project forward on both the right and left sides. There is a plank door at the center of the left-hand gable, which has a single pitched plank above it. The center of the 18th-century infill between the projecting gables features a wide six-panelled door, with the upper four panels glazed. A gabled latticework porch is also present. The east front has a four-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned cellar window.
The right gable end has a projecting triple stack, while there is an axial stack and a lateral stack from the right-hand wall of the left-hand wing. Inside, the farmhouse has flat-chamfered beams with ogee stops, an 18th-century corner cupboard with fielded panels, and a washing copper and bread oven that remain in situ in the 19th-century lean-tos. The roof structure includes queen posts and queen struts.
