Description

Spittle Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, which was remodeled in the early 19th century and has undergone internal alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, with the upper storey rendered. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, featuring clay ridge tiles and hip finials, and there are brick stacks at each end. A rear lateral hall stack is capped with a gable from the 19th century.

The original layout was a three-room and through-passage plan, with a parlour to the left of the passage at the upper left end and a kitchen beyond the hall at the right end. In the 20th century, the screen partitions were removed to create a single large room that includes the hall and the gable end fireplace, formed from the parlour and part of the hall. There is a single-storey dairy outbuilding at the right end.

The exterior features two storeys and a seven-window range, with 20th-century fenestration consisting of all two-light casements, except for a three-light window in the hall. The porch has a gabled slate roof with clay ridge tiles, a finial, and a metal fire insurance plaque, with a plank inner door.

The interior has been largely altered in the 20th century, but the kitchen retains a large 19th-century fireplace with a cambered brick arch, while the hall fireplace features a rough chamfered timber lintel. The roof has pegged A-frame trusses with lapped collars.
