Description
Morchard Mill is a house dating from the early to mid 19th century, with a rear wing that is likely older. It is constructed from snecked local stone, with the rear wing partly plastered. The roof is slate, gabled at both ends, while the rear wing has a mix of slate and corrugated iron roofing. The building features projecting stone stacks at the ends, with diagonally-set paired brick shafts.
The house is designed in an L shape with modest Tudor details. The main range is single depth, two rooms wide, with a central entrance that likely faces the staircase. The rear left wing may predate the main range and serves partly as a service area and partly for storage. The structure is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay front. This front includes a central gabled porch with ornamental bargeboards, a chamfered rounded outer doorway, and a panelled front door leading to the inner door. There are two first-floor gabled dormers with ornamental bargeboards and two-light casements featuring three panes per light, along with similar three-light casements on the ground floor.
On the rear elevation, there is a first-floor Tudor arched stair light with ornamental glazing. The rear wing has casement windows and a first-floor entrance on the left. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to contain mill machinery. Morchard Mill is first documented in the 15th century according to Margaret C.S. Cruwys in her work "A Cruwys Morchard Notebook, 1066-1874" published in 1939.
