Description
The Wolery is a house, believed to have been the agent's house for the Cruwys Estate, dating from the early 17th century with significant remodelling in the 20th century. It is constructed of whitewashed, rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the ends. The right end has a stack, while the axial stack has been dismantled.
The layout consists of a single depth, three-room plan with an approximately central entrance leading into a lobby formed by the back-to-back axial stacks, which have been truncated above the first floor level. Originally, the arrangement included a parlour to the left, a kitchen to the right, and a small service room at the rear of the axial stacks accessible from the kitchen. The house has been extended at the left end, enlarging the left room, and there is an additional small room at the right end of unknown date. A 20th-century staircase is located against the front wall of the right-hand room.
The exterior features two storeys with an asymmetrical three-window front, where the thatch eaves are eyebrowed over the first-floor windows. There is a 20th-century thatched gabled porch and 20th-century casement windows with square leaded panes, arranged in one, two, and three lights.
Inside, the left room has a chamfered scroll-stopped cross beam and an open fireplace with a deep cambered scroll-stopped lintel. The right room also features an open fireplace with a scroll-stopped lintel and a bread oven. The roof is constructed with jointed cruck roof construction, featuring two trusses (with no access to the apex) dressed off below the side-pegged joint. The Wolery is located in the centre of the village and has group value with Town Farmhouse, Post Cottage, and Town Cottage.
