Description

Dartcombe Mill is a cottage and adjoining mill that has been converted into a house. It dates from the early to mid 17th century, with possible extensions in the 18th century and a mill built in the 19th century. The building was repaired and partly rebuilt in the late 20th century. It features rendered cob and a dry slate roof with gabled ends, and a higher level roof on the right. There are axial and gable end stacks with short brick shafts.

The original house has a two-room plan with a central axial stack, an entrance lobby in front, and a staircase against the stack at the back. A narrow unheated room was added later on the left end, and in the 19th century, a mill was constructed at the extreme left end. The mill has been extensively rebuilt and converted to provide additional accommodation for the house.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three:four window arrangement on the south front. The four-window range on the right is the original house, featuring 19th and 20th century two and three-light casements with glazing bars. There is a doorway to the right with a 20th century door and a small open-fronted gabled porch, along with a large 20th century gabled closed porch on the left.

On the rear elevation, the original house on the left has a projecting rounded stair turret at the centre, which includes a small 17th century chamfered wooden mullion window and a similar 17th century window on the left. The back wall bows out to the right, where there are two large 20th century gabled dormers.

Inside, the main room on the left side of the original house features exposed ceiling beams and a large open fireplace. There are two jointed cruck trusses, with the left truss being a closed truss that forms a partition, complete with a chamfered door frame on the first floor.
