Description

Post Cottage is a house that likely dates from the late 17th century. It is built of colourwashed and rendered cob and stone, topped with a thatched roof that is gabled at the left end and half-hipped at the right end. The house features a projecting stack at the left end and a rear stack at the right corner, although the shaft of the latter has been dismantled.

The layout consists of a single depth plan with two heated rooms, one on either side of the entrance. This entrance leads into a small lobby that connects to a service room and a stairway at the rear. The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with four windows. There are two 20th-century front doors in the centre: one leads into the lobby and the other into the left-hand room, which was formerly used as the Post Office. The windows are small casements with glazing bars.

Inside, the left-hand room features deeply-chamfered cross beams and an open fireplace with a plain timber lintel. The right-hand room has a corner fireplace. At the time of the survey in 1986, there was no access to the roof space, but the visible principals upstairs are boxed in and appear to be straight. Post Cottage is located in the centre of Templeton village and has group value with the church, village pump, and Town Cottage.
