Description

56 and 58 High Street is a house dating from the 18th century, with a likely 19th-century rear wing. It is constructed of colourwashed rendered cob and stone, topped with a thatched roof that is gabled at both ends, and features a brick end stack. The building has a single depth plan with two rooms heated from end stacks, with the left room being slightly larger. The current entrance is located at the right gable end, though the original entrance's position is unclear. An unheated rear service wing is probably an addition from the 19th century.

The house is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with two windows. The thatch eaves are eyebrowed over the first-floor windows. The left first-floor window is a two-light casement with six panes per light, while the right first-floor window and three ground-floor windows are two-light 20th-century casements, possibly set in original embrasures. The entrance features a 19th-century plank door with strap hinges, and the front wall extends to the left to form an open-fronted store with a slate roof.

Inside, both ground-floor rooms have chamfered cross beams. The left room includes an open fireplace with one ashlar and one stone rubble jamb, along with a cambered lintel. Traces of the original straight stone stair, which was located against the rear wall, can still be seen, although it has been replaced by a 20th-century timber stair. Access to the roof space was not available during the survey in 1986, but the straight principal rafters indicate an 18th-century structure. Some old wall and ceiling plaster remains on the first floor.
