Description
This is a house built around the mid-to-late 19th century, incorporating 17th-century timbers and carved brackets, with a rear addition dating to the 1960s. It is likely constructed of brick, but finished with a decorative facade that mimics timber framing, featuring hollow-chamfered studs and rails with plaster infill. The roof is covered with ornamental slates, with a gable on the right-hand side.
The architectural style is an unusual, free Tudor design. The house has a double-depth, four-room plan with a central passage and the aforementioned 1960s additions to the rear.
The front of the house is symmetrical with three bays. A central gabled porch is supported by reused 17th-century carved brackets depicting grotesque figures. The arched doorway has a Tudor-arched plank front door, fitted with moulded strips and an ornate Gothic door knocker. Canted bay windows flank the front door, each with a lead tent roof and eight panes in the central light, and four in the outer. First-floor oriel bay windows are also supported by reused 17th-century brackets with ornate slated roofs; each window has four panes in the centre and two in the outer lights. A central first-floor casement window has two lights, each with four panes.
Inside, the passage floor is paved with coloured tiles. The front elevation provides a very complete example of light-hearted 19th-century antiquarianism.
