Description
Poplar Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with 20th-century renovations. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, featuring a thatched roof with gabled ends and end stacks with brick shafts. The original layout was a two-room plan cottage with two heated rooms and likely a central stair hall. The internal ground floor partitions have been removed, and a single-storey flat-roofed extension has been added at the rear. The cottage is two storeys high and has a symmetrical two-window front, with the thatched eaves eyebrowed over the first-floor windows. The fenestration is regular, with a central thatched porch supported by posts. The ground floor windows are 2-light casements with 8 panes per light, while the first-floor windows are 2-light casements with 6 panes per light. The interior has been largely modernized, with two massive ground floor cross beams that are replacements, although one section of original exposed joists of large scantling remains.
