Description

Ide School, including iron railings and gates, is a building from the 1870s that serves as a school and former school house. It is constructed of roughly dressed volcanic trap and has an asbestos slate roof, gabled at the ends of the crosswings. The building is arranged in a U shape, featuring a central block with left and right crosswings. The larger left crosswing serves as the schoolroom, while the right crosswing is the school house, which has a lateral stack on the right return wall. Both wings are accessed through doors in the central block. Additionally, a smaller schoolroom was added to the rear left of the main structure, positioned at right angles to the schoolroom.

The schoolroom is a single storey, while the school house is two storeys tall. The facade displays a slightly asymmetrical arrangement of windows, with a total of three: one in the central block and one in each crosswing. The central block features a central gabled dormer, and both crosswings have gables facing the front. The schoolroom is topped with a gabled bellcote that has set-offs. The front doors are made of planks and are located to the left and right of the central block, set within doorways that have segmental arches. The central block has one ground floor and one first floor window, each a two-light casement with three panes per light. The schoolroom has a large three-light casement with four panes per light, along with a similar two-light casement on the right return. The schoolhouse features a three-light casement with three panes per light on the ground floor and similar two-light casements on the first floor. The right return also has two gabled dormers.

The school is elevated above High Street and is separated from the road by a brick retaining wall topped with iron railings that have fleur de lis finials. Stone gate piers with square sections and pyramidal caps flank an iron gate that features an overthrow, fleur de lis finials, and a dograil decorated with quatrefoils. In 1881, the school was extended by a separate brick block, which is not included in this listing.
