Description
WHITESTONE CHURCH LANE SX 89 SE
4/109 Church Bridge
- II
House, possibly formerly 2 cottages. Mid to late C17. Colourwashed rendered cob, thatched roof hipped at ends, brick end stacks. The original plan is uncertain, but there are 2 possibilities; either a single depth 2-room plan house with 2 heated rooms and small unheated service rooms at either end or, a pair of C17 cottages each with 1 heated room and 1 small outer service room with a partition wall dividing the cottages in the centre. The position of the original entrance or entrances is unclear, at present the house has a baffle entry against the right-hand (lower end) stck under a winder stair which is adjacent to the stack. The partition wall between the 2 principal rooms in the centre has been removed. 2 storeys. Irregular 5-window front with 1- and 2-light C20 casements with square- leaded panes, eaves thatch eyebrowed over first floor windows, C20 porch to right of centre. The rear of the house has a small blocked timber window, probably C17, on the first floor. Interior The fireplaces have stone rubble jambs and plain timber lintels, the left- hand (higher) end fireplace has been adapted when the small left-hand room was heated from the old stack. 2 chamfered cross beams with bar stops. The apex of the roof is not thoroughly accessible but the visible common rafters may be contemporary with the late C17 features elsewhere. Church Bridge is on a prominent corner site on Church Lane with an attractive cob and thatch exterior.
