Description
Whitestone House is a large house built in the early 19th century, with some remodeling in the late 19th century. The rear right wing may date back to the 18th century or earlier. The exterior is colourwashed and rendered, topped with a slate roof that is hipped on the main range and gabled at the ends of the rear wings, which also feature brick stacks. The original early 19th-century plan may have included a bow front, with an oval entrance hall likely from this period. The principal rooms are located to the left and right of the entrance hall, and there is a large stair hall with an open well stair behind the oval room. The rear left and right wings create a U-shape, originally surrounding a narrow rear courtyard that has been infilled with a single-storey addition from the 20th century. The rear right wing, likely serving as the main service and kitchen area, extends further back in two adjoining ranges that probably predate the early 19th century. In the late 19th century, the main range was refronted.
The house is two storeys high and features a symmetrical three-bay front with deep eaves supported by paired brackets, chamfered rusticated quoins, and two-storey bays flanking a central porch. The front is well-detailed, showcasing a Corinthian porch with smooth columns and pilasters, a six-panel front door with a panelled soffit to the doorcase, and a glazed lunette. The ground floor bay windows are round-headed two-pane sashes with faceted keystones and recessed panels in the spandrels, while the first-floor bay windows are segmental-headed two-pane sashes with keystones. All windows are separated by pilasters with Corinthian capitals, and the centre window on the first floor is a two-pane sash with a keystone. The wings mainly feature hornless sashes.
Inside, the house contains several notable features. The oval entrance hall has a plaster wall frieze and a central plaster motif, and the principal rooms on either side also have plaster friezes. The right-hand room includes a round-headed wall recess and a 19th-century chimney piece. The impressive open well stair features stick balusters and a ramped handrail. Other joinery elements include numerous doors with six fielded panels. Overall, Whitestone House is a well-preserved example of early and late 19th-century architecture, showcasing fine interior and exterior details.
