Description

Merrymeet is a house dating from the mid to late 18th century, constructed from colourwashed rendered cob with a thatched roof that has gabled ends and features end stacks with brick shafts. The house has a single-depth, two-room plan with heated rooms on either side of a central passage that contains a stair at the rear. There is a rear lean-to addition, partly in brick, which is likely from the late 19th century, although some cob sections may be older. At the left end of the building, there is a single-storey cob addition with a thatched roof that was previously used as a shop but has since been converted into part of the house.

The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front, with a one-room addition at the left end under a slightly lower roofline. A large 20th-century thatched porch is supported on posts and solid walls. The windows are regular in arrangement, consisting of 20th-century two-light windows with top-hung casements, except for a four-pane fixed window located below a six-pane fixed window.

Inside, there is a charming early 19th-century curved stair featuring stick balusters, a curved handrail, and a turned newel on the first floor. The ground floor room on the right has a rough cross beam and slender exposed joists. The roof trusses are said to be pegged, with straight principals visible in the first-floor rooms. Merrymeet is slightly set back from the main road through Whitestone.
