Description

Hillside is a small house dating from the mid-17th century, with some 19th-century additions. It features rendered cob and rubble walls and has a gable-ended thatched roof. There are stone stacks at each end, both with brick shafts, and the left-hand stack has a moulded dripcourse. The house has a two-room plan, originally with a larger heated room on the left and an unheated room on the right. A straight stair in the passage may not have been added later. At the left-hand end, there are outbuildings that were originally a stable and smithy, with 19th-century outshuts added at the front and rear.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical one-window front, featuring a 19th-century outshut at the centre and a 20th-century glazed porch built against its left-hand side. There are 20th-century two-light casements on the left side of each floor, and a lower outbuilding range at the left-hand end.

Inside, the house has roughly chamfered, closely spaced ceiling beams. The fireplace includes dressed stone jambs and a roughly chamfered wooden lintel. The roof structure consists of collars lapped and pegged onto straight principals, with all the timbers showing signs of blackening, although it is unlikely to be from smoke.
