Description
No. 1 is a house located in Northlew, dating from the 17th century, possibly with earlier origins. It features rendered cob walls and a gable-ended thatch roof, with two brick end stacks, one of which is set on a projecting rendered rubble base. The building has a three-room-and-through-passage plan, with the lower end situated to the left and the hall stack positioned at the higher right end.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with one window on the upper floor and two windows on the ground floor. The small 19th-century two-light casement window is located on the right side of the first floor, while the ground floor features 20th-century two and three-light casements. A 20th-century plank door is positioned towards the left-hand end of the building.
Inside, the hall fireplace includes a chamfered wooden lintel with straight cut stops and dressed stone jambs. The joists are thin and chamfered, also featuring similar stops. The roof is likely a 19th-century pegged A-frame design, resting on a wall-plate.
