Description
Nos 1 and 2 The Arcade are a pair of houses dating from the early 18th century. They have rendered cob and rubble walls and a hipped thatch roof, with two brick end stacks. The original layout is not entirely clear, but it likely started as a pair of two-room plan cottages, with the left-hand cottage extended by one room in the 19th century. It is possible that one of the cottages had some light industrial use in the 19th century, as suggested by its long bay window on the first floor.
The houses are two storeys high with an asymmetrical five-window front. The right-hand cottage features two 20th-century two-light casements and a central gabled porch that has a 19th-century six-panel door behind it. At the left end of this cottage, there is a projection with a 20th-century canted bay window on the ground floor and a long 19th-century bay window above with overlapping panes. A 20th-century door leads to the left-hand cottage, which is situated below the end of the bay window, with the 19th-century addition beyond it and 20th-century two-light casements and another bay window on the ground floor to the far left. The interior was inaccessible at the time of the survey.
