Description

South Wilborough Cottages are a pair of cottages that were originally one house, dating from the 17th century. They were extended, likely in the 18th century, and altered in the 19th century. The cottages have rendered cob walls and a thatched roof, which is gabled to the right and hipped to the left. There are two rendered rubble lateral stacks at the rear, with the left-hand stack projecting slightly, and a brick chimney at the right gable end.

The original layout was probably a three-room and through-passage plan, which has been significantly altered. The lower room on the left and the hall are heated by the rear lateral stacks, and a gable end fireplace was added to the inner room in the 19th century. The building was extended slightly at the lower end, likely in the 18th century, and was divided into two cottages in the 19th century at the upper end of the hall. Early 20th-century outshuts were added at the rear of the hall and lower end.

The cottages are two storeys tall and feature an asymmetrical window front, with No. 1 located to the right. On the first floor, there are early 19th-century 16-pane sash windows, except for the central window, which is a two-light casement from the 20th century. The ground floor has a 19th-century two-light casement with small panes on the left end, while the other windows are mostly 20th-century two-light casements, except for one single light window to the left of centre. To the left of this is a late 19th-century panelled door to No. 2, complete with side-lights, and to the right of centre is a narrow 20th-century part-glazed door to No. 1. The left-hand end of the house is a recessed extension.

Inside, no original features are visible, although some may be concealed. The roof space has not been inspected, but there may be an early roof structure present.
