Description

Wilborough Farmhouse is a house, formerly a farmhouse, dating from the late 17th century, with 19th and 20th-century extensions. It features rendered rubble and cob walls, topped by a hipped slate roof. At the front, there is a slightly projecting rendered rubble lateral stack with offsets, along with rendered brick stacks at each gable end. The original layout was a three-room and through-passage plan, with the lower room on the right heated by the gable end stack, and the hall heated by the front lateral stack, which includes newel stairs at the rear of the hall or inner room. The inner room may have originally been unheated. A 19th-century dairy wing has been added at the rear of the lower room, with a barn extension beyond it that has since been converted. There is also a 20th-century extension behind the inner room. The house is two storeys high, with an asymmetrical four-window front featuring early to mid-19th-century 16-pane sashes on the first floor and 20th-century replicas on the ground floor. To the right of centre is an early 19th-century six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed and the middle two fielded. At the rear, there is a shallow rectangular stair projection to the right of centre, which has a small light and a scantle slate roof. To its left is the single-storey dairy wing, and to the right is a 20th-century outshut. Inside, the plain wooden lintels over the fireplaces may have been replaced, and the treads of the newel stairs have also been replaced. The roof timbers were not inspected but are unlikely to be early, as the roof appears to have been raised.
