Description
Oaklands is a house, originally two cottages, dating back to the 17th century and renovated in the late 19th century. The walls are plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. It was initially a pair of two-room cottages facing south, with extensions to the rear. A central cob wall divides the cottages, and there are end stacks. Oaklands Cottage is attached to the east end. The front has a four-window arrangement with late 19th-century four-pane sash windows and a 20th-century front door positioned to the right of centre. A large projecting stack is located in the left (west) gable. The interior largely features late 19th-century detailing. The left-hand cottage now incorporates a single ground floor room, while the right-hand cottage has a 19th-century staircase. The right-hand room contains an axial chamfered beam with run-out stops and a large rubble fireplace with a plain oak lintel and a brick side oven. Each half of the building has a two-bay roof with A-frame trusses and pegged lap-jointed collars.
