Description
Cross Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a cottage. It dates from the early to mid-17th century and was remodeled in the late 19th century. The building is made of plastered cob and rubble, with cob or rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and features a thatched roof. It has an L-shaped layout, with the main block facing southwest and a rear block at right angles. The structure includes a two-room front block, a small lobby to the left (which may have been a passage, hall, and inner room of the earlier farmhouse), and a two-room rear block. Alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries have obscured the original arrangement.
The cottage is two storeys high and has a three-window front featuring various sizes of 19th and 20th-century casements, including 20th-century French windows at the left end. There is a 19th-century door to the right of the center, which is sheltered by a late 19th-century porch with trellis sides and shaped bargeboards. The rear block has a door that leads through a projecting stack. Inside, the main front room has a double-ovolo moulded beam, while the rear room features a chamfered beam with scroll stops. The end room of the rear block was formerly used as a dairy, with a hayloft above. The roof is not accessible.
