Description

Stockleigh Court is a large house built in the early 19th century. It features a plastered rubble exterior, with rubble stacks and 19th-century brick chimney shafts, topped by a slate roof with lead ridges. The house has a double depth plan, facing east towards the park, with two rooms on either side of a central entrance hall and staircase. The main block is three storeys high and has symmetrical five-window front, all of which are 12-pane sash windows. The ground floor windows have flat recessed stucco architraves, with plain flanking pilasters and stucco incised to resemble ashlar.

The central entrance features an original six-panel front door, which is now part-glazed, and has an overlight with diagonal glazing bars, panelled reveals, and a flat-roofed Tuscan porch supported by timber posts with a moulded entablature. The eaves are deep, resting on pairs of shaped brackets, and there is an original cast iron gutter with lion-mask joints. The roof is hipped at both ends and flanked by brick chimney shafts.

To the left (south) side, there is a single-storey ancillary wing designed in the same style, which has a large 12-pane sash window with a flat-recessed architrave and stucco incised as ashlar. This wing features a low pediment with a recessed tympanum and flanking antifixa. At the left end, a pilaster rises as a square pier with a plain cap that supports a classical vase. The left end of the ancillary block includes a 19th-century six-panel door, an overlight with glazing bars, and a flat hood on shaped timber brackets.

The rear elevation is not completely regular, showcasing a variety of sash windows with glazing bars, including 25, 15, 16, and 12-pane sashes. Inside, the property retains much of its original joinery and plasterwork. Stockleigh Court was home to the Bellew family from the 16th century to the 20th century.
