Description

Downhayne Farmhouse and Cottage is a farmhouse and adjoining cottage built in the early to mid-19th century, which was modernised in 1984. The building is constructed of plastered rubble with rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and it features a slate roof. The gable-ended range faces southeast and consists of a double-depth two-room house on the right (northeast) and a similar one-room cottage on the left. There is an end stack on the right and an axial stack located between the house and the cottage. The overall façade has five windows, which are 16-pane sashes, with the main entrance positioned towards the right. This entrance features a four-panel door with an overlight that includes glazing bars, panelled reveals, and a Doric porch. The cottage has its door at the left end, which is sheltered by a flat-roofed hood supported on shaped consoles. The right end of the building has one window that is slightly recessed from the main front to maintain symmetry. The front garden is enclosed by cast iron railings set on rubble footings, with the rails featuring fleur de lys finials and alternating hoops over some of the rails.
