Description

Lillybrook Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into two cottages, now functioning as a single house. It dates back to the 16th century, with improvements from the 17th century and alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. The structure features plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble or cob stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and a wheat reed thatched roof. Originally, it was a three-room-and-through-passage house facing south, with the former inner room located at the left (west) end. The interior was rearranged in the 18th century when it was divided into two cottages.

The building has projecting end stacks and a lateral hall stack that projects to the front. There are continuous outshots across the back wall, which faces the road. It is two storeys tall and has a four-window front featuring late 19th-century and 20th-century casements, with two windows on each side of a roughly central stack. Two small first-floor windows to the right have thatch eyebrows above them, while the windows to the left rise into the eaves. A 20th-century door leads to the former passage, located to the right of centre, and there is a secondary cottage door at the left end.

Inside, the left room, which was the former inner room, contains a late 16th to early 17th-century axial beam that is chamfered with step stops. The hall fireplace features a possibly reset 16th-century oak lintel. The roof over the hall appears to consist of 18th-century trusses.
