Description
Higher Way Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that was extended in the 20th century. It is constructed from rendered cob or rubble and features a dry slate roof. The farmhouse has rendered end stacks, with the left-hand stack over a three-stage rendered external breast that has clay tile and slate weatherings. Originally, it had a two-room plan with a presumed hall on the left, and it was extended with a pantry and dairy outshut at the rear, likely in the 18th century.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a three-window range, along with a two-window range from the 20th-century wing on the right. The windows are late 19th or 20th-century horned sashes set under segmental arches, with tripartite sashes except for a four-pane sash above the central doorway, which features a panelled door within a glazed porch.
Inside, the hall contains a large fireplace with a 19th-century wooden mantelshelf on brackets. This fireplace is still in use as a large open fireplace, complete with 19th-century brick hobs and retaining five toothed pot hangers and other 19th-century cooking utensils. The hall also has two chamfered and stopped crossbeams, and between them is a very heavy 18th-century doorframe with a good planked door that provides access to the rear wing. Other 18th-century features include planked doors with original furniture, a six-panel door with fielded panels leading to the parlour, and a straight-flight staircase. The king-post roof structure is lime-washed and dates from the 19th century.
