Description
Wood Farmhouse is a farmhouse that probably dates from the 18th century. It is whitewashed and rendered, featuring a thatched roof with a plain ridge, gabled at the right end and hipped at the left end. The building has a right end stack with a brick shaft and an axial stack also with a brick shaft. The plan form is not entirely clear as there was no access to the interior during the survey in 1986, but it appears to be a single depth main range plan with principal heated rooms on either side of a central entrance. At the left end, the first-floor accommodation extends over a one-room plan storeroom. There is a rear right outshut with a slate roof and a single-storey lean-to at the left end.
The exterior is two storeys high with a five-window front that has regular fenestration, approximately symmetrical between the chimney stacks. The central 20th-century front door is topped by a flat porch canopy supported by moulded brackets. The windows are 19th and 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars, and there is an additional doorway into the storeroom at the extreme left. The rear elevation features a back door to the right of center below a two-light casement with square leaded panes, a doorway at the extreme right, and one ground floor two-light casement with glazing bars; the outshut has casement windows.
The interior has not been thoroughly inspected, but the right-hand room contains two roughly chamfered cross beams, while the left-hand room features a boxed-in cross beam and a 19th-century chimneypiece. Other features may still exist, and an inspection of the roof timbers might require a revision of the suggested dating.
