Description

Ward Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, possibly with earlier origins, and was extended in the later 17th century and 18th century, with 19th-century additions. It features stone rubble and cob walls, with the cob rendered on the first floor at the front. The roof is thatched, gabled at the left end and hipped to the right. There are three rendered stacks: a brick stack on a stone base at the left gable end, a central axial stack made of rubble with a brick shaft, and a brick stack to the right.

The original plan consisted of a three-room-and-through-passage layout with the lower end to the left. The hall stack backs onto the passage, and the lower room is heated by a gable-end fireplace, while the inner room may have had a later addition for heating. The house was extended by one unheated room in the later 17th century or early 18th century, and there is an 18th-century outbuilding adjoining it. A 19th-century outshut was built at the rear.

The exterior has two storeys and features a long, asymmetrical six-window front with 20th-century two, three, and four-light casements. There are 20th-century French windows to the left and a part-glazed door to the passage towards the left-hand end, which has a thatched door hood. A 19th-century or early 20th-century lean-to porch is located at the front of the right-hand end, with a 19th-century plank and part-glazed door behind it, and a small gabled early 20th-century wing projecting from the end. An outbuilding with a corrugated iron roof extends from the right-hand end.

Inside, the lower and inner rooms have chamfered ceiling beams, and all the fireplaces have modern grates. The roof structure may be of considerable interest, but it was inaccessible at the time of the survey.
