Description

Herdwick Farmhouse is an early to mid-17th century farmhouse, possibly with earlier origins. It is constructed of rendered cob walls with a thatched roof; the roof is gabled to the left and hipped to the right end. The house originally had a 3-room-and-through-passage plan, with the lower end to the right. It features an axial rubble stack with a brick shaft, a rear lateral brick stack, and a brick shaft at the left gable end. A small 19th-century wing and outshuts have been added to the rear. The asymmetrical front features a 5-window arrangement of 2- and 3-light early 20th-century casements, with a gabled 20th-century porch containing a 20th-century plank door located to the right of the centre. Inside the hall, there is a chamfered ceiling beam with hollow step stops. The axial beam in the lower room has run-out stops. The roof structure probably dates from the 17th century and includes substantial principal rafters with trenched purlins.
