Description

Abbotsham Farmhouse is likely a 17th-century core, substantially refurbished and enlarged in the early 19th century. It is built of plastered cob on rubble footings, with cob or rubble stacks topped with 20th-century brick, and thatched roofs. The house has a double-depth plan, facing south-east, comprising two parallel ranges. The front range contains two rooms with projecting end stacks, one room either side of the entrance lobby and staircase. The back range has an unheated service room, a central cross passage, and a kitchen to the right (north-east) with a projecting rear lateral stack. Secondary outshots extend across the rear.

The symmetrical front elevation has three windows. It includes horned 16-pane sashes to the left and four-pane sashes elsewhere. A 20th-century plank door sits centrally, protected by a contemporary gabled porch with a corrugated asbestos roof. Both roofs are hipped at each end, and the outshots have corrugated asbestos roofing.

Internally, the farmhouse is largely the result of 19th and 20th-century renovations. The rear service room retains exposed beams, including two crossbeams with roughly-finished soffit-chamfers. All fireplaces have been blocked with 20th-century grates. The accessible roof of the rear block is supported by 19th-century king post trusses. Earlier features are probably concealed within the front block. The site of Abbotsham was formerly a medieval manor.
