Description

Westpark Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that underwent significant remodelling around the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with further additions in the 19th century. The construction utilizes plastered cob walls, topped with a thatched roof – half-hipped at the ends of the main range, gabled to the rear wing, and lower on the right-hand range. The farmhouse features a large projecting plastered rubble stack with a brick shaft at the right-hand end of the main range, another brick stack at the left-hand end, and a further stack at the gable end of the right-hand range.

The original layout is obscured by later alterations. The main range to the left displays a symmetrical two-room plan with a central stairhall, the right-hand room seemingly dating back to the 17th century. A probable 18th-century unheated dairy wing is located behind the left-hand room. A recessed, lower range, also apparently 17th century, extends from the right-hand room and originally projected further in that direction. 19th-century outshuts have been added along the rear wall.

The main range received remodelling and possible extension during the late 18th or early 19th century, likely extending it to the left. The left-hand range presents a symmetrical three-window front with late 18th or early 19th-century tripartite sash windows – 4:8:4 panes on the first floor and 5:15:5 panes on the ground floor. A panelled and glazed double door is centered on the first floor, with a late 18th or early 19th-century six-panelled door below it, flanked by pilasters and surmounted by a flat slate doorhood. A lower, one-window range is recessed from the right-hand end, featuring 20th-century casements and a lean-to porch in the angle with the main range. The rear elevation is largely occupied by 19th-century outshuts, except for the dairy wing at the right-hand end.

The interior of the main range showcases panelled shutters and doors, arches, and an open string staircase with stick balusters and carved tread ends, all dating from the remodelling. The right-hand room retains chamfered cross beams and a large open fireplace with a 19th-century surround concealing an older lintel. Another open fireplace is present in the right-hand range. The roof timbers are entirely 19th century, featuring straight principals. The farmhouse is noted for its picturesque exterior and its considerable landscape value, visible from a distance.
