Description
The obelisk and railings located northeast of the Church of the Holy Cross are a commemorative structure from the early 19th century. Made of Portland stone ashlar, the stone obelisk stands on a tall pedestal featuring recessed inscription panels. The panel on the south side honors Henry Cruwys, Rector, who was the last male descendant of the ancient Cruwys family that owned significant estates in the parish for several centuries. It notes that he is buried in a small house borrowed from his brethren, the Worms, in hope of resurrection and eternal life, and states that he died in 1804. The inscription on the west side commemorates a child who died in 1800. Surrounding the obelisk are iron railings topped with flame finials, and the corner rails are columnar with urn finials. The obelisk is further enclosed by yew trees planted in the corner of the churchyard nearest to Cruwys House.
