Description
The Weeks headstone and Mogridge chest tomb, including railings, are located immediately southwest of the aisle of the Church of the Holy Cross. The chest tomb dates from the early 19th century, while the headstone is from the mid-19th century. The rectangular chest tomb is rendered and features a plain oversailing lid. An inscription on the lid commemorates William Mogridge, who died in 1829, along with other family members. A panel on the west end honors Salome Weeks, who died in 1849. Surrounding the chest tomb are decorative iron railings with reeded verticals and fishtail finials, while the corner verticals are columnar with urn finials. These railings are similar to those around the Drake chest tomb. To the north, the headstone is also enclosed by iron railings and features a scrolled head with an inscription commemorating Susan Weeks, who died in 1851, along with other family members. The railings around the headstone are simpler, with spearhead finials on the verticals and columnar uprights at the corners topped with urn finials. A small stone at the west end of the railings surrounding the chest tomb is inscribed "Entrance to vault." This grouping, along with the railings, contributes to the character of the churchyard, which contains other memorials with railings that are significant to the setting of the Church.
