Description
Eveleighs is a house that originally served as the keeper's cottage for Cruwys Morchard House and later became a dower house. It has origins dating back to the early 17th century and was remodeled and extended in the 19th century, likely in two phases. The building is constructed of stone rubble and cob, with some areas re-faced in stone during the 1980s. The first floor of the wing is whitewashed and rendered, and it features a slate roof with gabled ends and an axial stack on the east-facing wing.
The layout is in an L shape, with a single-depth east-facing range that is two rooms wide. The rear left wing, which is at right angles to the main range, contains one principal room and a staircase. The main entrance is located facing the stair, with an additional central entrance on the east elevation. Although the exterior appears to be from the early to mid-19th century, the house has multiple phases of construction. The left-hand ground floor room of the east-facing range dates back to the 17th century and seems to have been remodeled in the early 19th century into a two-room plan. The house was upgraded to a dower house for Cruwys Morchard House in the late 19th century when a south-facing wing was added and the principal entrance was relocated to the south front.
The house is two storeys high, with a south elevation featuring two windows on the upper floor and one on the lower floor. The right end has a gable, and the central front doorway, which is from the 19th century, is located to the left of centre and includes a rectangular fanlight. To the right of the door are boxed 16-pane hornless sash windows, while to the left are 16-pane sashes with smaller margin panes. Above the door is a similar 4-pane sash window. The east elevation has three bays, a 20th-century stone open-fronted porch with a lean-to roof, and 19th-century two-light timber casements with margin glazing.
Inside, the 17th-century room features a chamfered cross beam with step stops and a fireplace from the same period that includes a bread oven, stone rubble jambs, and a chamfered stopped lintel. Other joinery details in the house are from the 19th century. Eveleighs has documented history dating back to the 17th century and was occupied in 1872 by Mr. Laurie, the curate of Cruwys Morchard Church.
