Description
The milestone east of Thurlibeer House is a late 19th-century stone located on the A3072 road. This rectangular slate stone has straight edges and a chamfered front surface, which is inscribed with the words 'HOLSY 6 / BUDE 3 1/2 STRATTON 2'. Some of the original black paint on the inscription is still visible, although the stone has a slight damage to the right-hand corner.
This milestone is part of a series of slate milestones that were erected between Bude and Highampton in Devon during the 1870s when the road was improved. Of this group, three milestones have survived in Devon, all listed at Grade II, and three similar stones remain in Cornwall along this route, including this one. The milestone is also marked on the Ordnance Survey map from 1880.
It is recognized for its unusual material and design, remains fully legible, and is situated in its original location. The milestone has good group value with other listed milestones of the same design along this stretch of road, reflecting the historical development of road use in the area and serving as a physical marker of the region's transport history.
