Description
The milestone, dated 1834, is located northeast of Higher Wainsford Cottage. It has a triangular shape with two dressed faces and a flat, slightly sloping top, standing approximately 60 centimeters high. Two faces feature large, deeply incised lettering, painted black, indicating distances to Bodmin and Liskeard. The left face reads "L 6 1/2" and the right face reads "B 6".
This milestone is part of a series erected by the Bodmin Turnpike Trust, which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1769. In 1834, the Trust improved its route from Bodmin to Liskeard, installing several milestones along the new nine-mile stretch through the Glyn Valley. This particular milestone is one of eight surviving examples along the turnpike route.
It is listed at Grade II because it remains in its original location and is intact. It serves as a good example of a 19th-century milestone, reflecting the standardization of roads and the establishment of turnpikes to meet the transport needs of the increasingly industrial landscape of 19th-century Cornwall. Additionally, it has group value with other listed milestones along the route.
