Milestone South Of Bodmin School (Ngr Sx0778165458)

The milestone, dating from around 1769, is made of carved granite and has a rectangular shape with two dressed faces and a rounded top. It stands approximately 65 centimeters high and features large, deeply incised lettering that indicates the distance to Bodmin, reading: '1/B'.

This milestone is part of a series established by the Bodmin Turnpike Trust, which was created by an Act of Parliament in 1769. The trust implemented waymarkers on its routes, and this particular milestone is one of the earliest erected by the Trust, marking the first of four milestones along the route south of Bodmin. While there were at least five milemarkers on roads leading from Bodmin, only two are known to have survived.

The milestone on the B3268 south of Bodmin School is listed for several reasons: it is one of the first milestones erected by the Bodmin Turnpike Trust, it remains intact and close to its original location, it has group value with other nearby listed milestones, and it serves as a good example of an 18th-century milestone, reflecting the standardization of roads and the introduction of turnpikes to support the transport needs of Cornwall's growing industrial landscape.
