Description
The milestone opposite Madison Place is a historic marker erected in 1835. Made of granite, it has a roughly triangular shape with chipped corners and stands about 0.3 meters high with a flat top. The stone is painted white and features black lettering on one side, inscribed with "B/12."
This milestone is significant as it is the most westerly marker of the Bodmin Turnpike Trust, which was established in 1769. It was placed at the end of the road connecting Higher Fraddon and Bodmin when the route was realigned and lengthened in 1835. This realignment improved the gradient of the road and required the addition of a twelfth milestone, while the other eleven milestones along the route were relocated approximately a quarter of a mile. The Bodmin Turnpike Trust was dissolved in 1874, and the route was subsequently managed by the new County Council.
The milestone is designated as Grade II due to its historic interest as a well-preserved example of an 1830s stone on an important turnpike road, and it remains in its original location and intact condition.
