Description
Balloon Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with later alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as some changes in the 20th century. It is constructed of granite rubble and has a corrugated asbestos roof with gable ends, which was probably originally thatched and features raised coped verges. The gable end stacks are made of granite ashlar and have cornices and shaped tops.
The farmhouse has a two-room plan with a central passage; the left room was likely the kitchen and the right room the parlour, both heated by gable end stacks. In the 18th century, a single-storey outshut with a loft was added to the rear of the house, which includes two unheated rooms and a central stair.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical three-window front. The central entrance features a 19th-century four-panelled door with a slate hood. On the ground floor, to the left is a three-light 20th-century casement window with a granite lintel, and to the right is a 19th-century eight-pane sash window. The first floor has a three-light 20th-century window to the left, a 19th-century eight-pane sash to the right, and a central three-light 19th-century casement window, with three panes in each light and L hinges. The left end of the house is blind and has a 20th-century lean-to, while the right end is also blind; the outshut features a two-pane window on the ground floor and a four-pane window on the first floor.
At the rear, there is a two-light, three-pane casement window, a two-light six-pane horizontal sash, a plank door, a four-pane sash, and a three-pane casement window on the right. Inside, the passage has an 18th-century panelled screen partition wall on the left, with a two-panelled fielded early 18th-century door. Both rooms to the left and right have moulded beams, but the rest of the house is not accessible.
