Description
This milestone, located 350 meters east of the White Cross crossroads on the south side of the A392, was erected in the mid-19th century for the Newquay Highway Board. It is made of granite and is set back from the road, with a rectangular shape and a height of approximately 0.70 meters. The milestone features a pent head with chamfered shoulders and is painted white. The front (north) face is inscribed with the word "NEWQUAY" and the distance "6" in sans serif capital letters, with the lettering highlighted in black.
The Newquay Highway Board was established under the Highways Act of 1835 and was responsible for placing a series of milestones along the three main routes into the town. This particular milestone, part of that group, is believed to date from between 1835 and 1852.
This milestone is designated as Grade II due to its historic interest as a clear and well-preserved example of a mid-19th century milestone that remains in its original location, as well as its group value with other designated milestones along the main routes into Newquay.
