Description
Milestone 155 meters north of Cosworth Farm is a Grade II listed milestone erected in the mid-19th century for the Newquay Highway Board. This granite monolith is set back from the road, rectangular in shape, and stands approximately 0.60 meters high. It features a pent head with chamfered shoulders and is painted white. The front (north) face is inscribed in sans serif capital letters with "NEWQUAY/ 5," and the lettering is highlighted in black. An OS benchmark is carved on the upper part of the front face.
The Newquay Highway Board was established under the Highways Act of 1835 and was responsible for installing a series of milestones, all designed similarly, on the main routes into the town. This milestone on the A392, located 155 meters north of Cosworth Farm, is part of this group and is believed to date from between 1835 and 1852.
This milestone is designated at Grade II due to its historic interest as a clear and well-preserved example of a mid-19th century milestone that remains in its original position, and it holds group value with other designated milestones along the main routes into Newquay.
