Description

The milestone outside No.34 Henver Road in Newquay was erected in the mid-19th century for the Newquay Highway Board. It is made of granite and has a rectangular shape, standing approximately 0.60 meters high. The milestone features a pent head with chamfered shoulders and is painted white. The front face, which faces north, is inscribed in capital letters with "NEWQUAY/ 1," and the lettering is highlighted in black. There is also an Ordnance Survey benchmark located on the upper part of the front face.

The Newquay Highway Board was established under the Highways Act of 1835 and was responsible for installing a series of milestones, all designed similarly, along the three main routes leading into the town. This particular milestone on Henver Road is part of that group and is believed to date from between 1835 and 1852.

This milestone is designated as Grade II due to its historic significance as a clear and well-preserved example of a mid-19th century milestone that remains in its original location. It also holds group value as it is part of a collection of designated milestones along the main routes into Newquay.
