Description
This milestone, located 325 meters southeast of Kestle Mill, was erected in the mid-19th century for the Newquay Highway Board. Made of granite, it is a rectangular monolith standing approximately 0.60 meters high and set back from the road. The milestone features a pent head with chamfered shoulders and is painted white. Its northeast face is inscribed in sans serif capital letters with "NEWQUAY/ 4," and the lettering is highlighted in black.
The Newquay Highway Board was established under the Highways Act of 1835 and was responsible for placing a series of milestones along the main routes into the town. This particular milestone on the A3058 is part of that group and is believed to date from between 1835 and 1852.
This milestone is designated for its historic interest as a clear and well-preserved example of a mid-19th century milestone that remains in its original location. It also has group value as it contributes to a collection of other designated milestones along the main routes into Newquay.
