Description
Tresillian House is a house built in the late 18th century and extended in the mid-19th century for the Gully-Bennett family. It is constructed of gritstone, featuring granite raised quoins and dressings around the openings, and has a Delabole slate roof. The building has a double pile plan with a central entrance hall on the northeast front that leads to a large stairwell at the rear. The layout includes a library and main drawing room on the southeast side, and a dining room in the northwest corner, which is connected by a butler's pantry located below the stairwell.
At the rear, there is a service wing, now a flat, which was altered in the 19th century and has a datestone above the secondary entrance on the northwest front, along with a servants' stair. The entrance front has two storeys and features five window bays, with the central three bays closely spaced and a central porch that has an open outer door, side lights, and a hipped roof. The inner door is panelled and has a leaded overlight. The windows are 12-paned sashes with concealed boxes, and the building includes granite flush quoins and radial lintel voussoirs. The southeast front has three bays and eaves supported by regularly spaced granite corbels, with a hipped roof and four symmetrical stacks, each with four flues and cylindrical pots.
Inside, the main reception rooms boast moulded plaster cornices, with a central floral rose in the drawing room, which also features a bold Carrara marble chimneypiece. The oak open well stair has turned balusters and a wreathed handrail, with a heavy baluster newel at the base and simple tread brackets. The stairwell has a coffered ceiling at the first-floor level and an octagonal roof light. The library was refitted in the late 19th to early 20th century.
