Description

Cavern Cottage is a house dating from the mid to late 19th century, with few later alterations. It is built of painted stone rubble and has a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends, featuring an axial stack with a brick shaft.

The cottage has a two-room plan, with a slightly projecting wing on the left that has a gable end facing the front left, and the entrance and another room to the right. The exterior presents an asymmetrical two-storey front, with the gable end on the left showcasing a gabled porch that has pierced bargeboards supported by wooden posts. The porch contains a plank door with beading, and there are single lights with transoms on either side. The first floor features a three-light mullion and transom window, also adorned with similar bargeboards. To the right, there is a square bay with a four-light mullion and transom window beneath a pitched roof, and a three-light mullion and transom window above it. There are 20th-century garage doors to the right, and the right end of the building is blind. The left side includes a square bay at ground floor level with a four-light mullion and transom window, again with a pitched roof over the bay, and a three-light mullion and transom window above it. The interior has not been inspected.
