Milestone 620M N Of Mitchell

This milestone, located 620 meters north of Mitchell, was erected in the mid-19th century for the Newquay Highway Board. Made from granite, it stands on the west side of a lay-by that marks the former route of the A3076. The milestone is rectangular in shape and approximately 0.60 meters high, featuring a pent head with chamfered shoulders, and is painted white. The front face is inscribed in sans serif capital letters with "NEWQUAY/ 7," and the lettering is highlighted in black.

The Newquay Highway Board, established under the Highways Act of 1835, was responsible for placing a series of milestones along the main routes into the town. This milestone is part of that group and is believed to date from between 1835 and 1852. During its restoration in 2008, it was found that part of the inscription had been covered with cement, likely during World War II when there was an order to "mutilate" milestones and signposts to prevent aiding an invading army. The cement was retained, and the inscription was repainted over it.

This milestone is designated at Grade II due to its historic interest as a mid-19th century example that remains in its original position and shows evidence of wartime defacing, as well as its group value with other designated milestones along the main routes into Newquay.
