Description
Wellesley House, built around 1800 to 1820, is a house with attached stables located on the north side of the A30 in Newlyn East. The building is constructed from gritstone ashlar and features a slate roof. The main block has a double pile plan with a central stair hall and flanking reception rooms, with the stair positioned at the back of the hall. To the right, there is an attached block that serves as a separate dwelling in the form of a cross wing, with storage at the rear. On the left side, there is a building that runs parallel to the road, likely originally used as stables with a loft above, and an ostler's dwelling at the west end.
The main elevation features a central entrance that is sheltered by a later pitched glazed porch. The entrance includes a four-panelled door with an overlight and panelled reveals, all set within a rusticated opening that has voussoirs and a high open pediment supported by consoles. There is a plat band, and the windows are twelve-paned sashes with concealed boxes, stone sills, and flat arches with raised keystones. The building has raised rusticated quoins and paired modillion eaves, along with rendered stacks.
To the left, there is a pointed arch leading to a through passage before the rubble and cob stable block, which has a central blocked arched opening and flanking arched windows, as well as a two-bay ostler's dwelling. The wing on the right, likely added in the late 19th century, features a central door and flanking casement windows, all with segmental heads and raised keystones. Above the door, there is a four-paned semi-dormer with a gable.
Inside, the left parlour is fully panelled and includes a cornice and dado rail, along with an 18th-century style fire surround that has a swag-decorated frieze. The room to the right of the hallway has a simple cornice and fire surround. The building was unoccupied at the time of the survey in January 1988.
