Description
The Pillars Hotel is a farmhouse that has been converted into a hotel, with a flat on the first floor. It has origins dating back to the 17th century, with a date of 1683 noted on a timber panel above the door. The building is constructed from rendered and painted stone and cob, topped with a slate roof. Originally, it likely followed a linhay plan but has undergone significant alterations.
The layout features an approximately central entrance leading to a former passage, with both flanking rooms now serving as bars and a servery located in the opened-up rear narrow bay. The building has gable stacks and an elevation of five bays. The near central entrance includes a 20th-century door and a painted date panel above it. The painted granite columns of the former porch have been reset wider apart. The windows are two-light timber designs, deeply set into the walls.
Inside, the gable open fireplaces have been rebuilt, and the ceiling joists have been renewed. The roof features low angled struts supporting the principal rafters. The Pillars Hotel is listed primarily for its group value with other nearby listed buildings.
