Description
The Quintrell Downs Milestone is a milestone dating from the mid-19th century, created for the Newquay Highway Board. Made of granite, it is a rectangular monolith that stands approximately 0.60 meters high and is set back from the road. The milestone features a pent head with chamfered shoulders and is painted white. The front face, which faces north, is inscribed with the words "NEWQUAY 3" in sans serif capital letters, with the lettering highlighted in black.
The Newquay Highway Board was established under the Highways Act of 1835 and was responsible for placing a series of milestones along the main routes into the town. This milestone at Quintrell Downs is part of that series and is believed to have been erected sometime between 1835 and 1852.
It is recognized for its historic interest as a clear and well-preserved example of a mid-19th century non-turnpike milestone, remaining in its original location. Additionally, it holds group value as it contributes to a collection of other designated milestones along the main routes into Newquay.
